The total time I was in Ireland was two months.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here we are using it with the past simple (I lived)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we can also use it with the present perfect:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long have you been painting professionally?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been (present perfect) I\u2019ve been painting <\/span><b>for 9 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (from nine years ago until now)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we can also use it with the future<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long will you be on holidays for?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m going to France next week and I\u2019ll be there <\/span><b>for two weeks<\/b><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, \u201dfor\u201dis very flexible \u2013 you can use it with any tense (past present future, perfect, simple). And it\u2019s always about how long, we use it with a period of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>2: Since<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since is not the same as for. Since is used with a time as well, but with the <\/span><b>starting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> point<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means <\/span><b>from <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a time in the past <\/span><b>until<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, when we talk about things that started in the past and continued to now, we use perfect tenses, particularly the present perfect. We don\u2019t use the past tense with since<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long have you been painting?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been painting since last week \/ since 1995 \/ since I was a child<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So since + a starting point, with perfect tenses (especially the present perfect)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>3: During<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use &#8216;during&#8217; with a noun to say &#8216;when&#8217; something happens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t mix up <\/span><b>during<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>for. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusingly,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during doesn\u2019t mean duration, we use <\/span><b>for<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So not, I was in Spain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 months, but I was in Spain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 3 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We usually use during to talk about one event, inside a longer event<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During my lunch break, I had a sandwich. Maybe the lunch break was an hour, and eating the sandwich was 5 minutes<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Lent, I didn\u2019t eat any chocolate<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we use <\/span><b>during<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to talk about an event or an activity, or one activity that happens inside another (sleeping during the day).
